Marseille is the capital of the department Mouths of the Rhone
and Blue theProvenza-Alpes-Costa region.
History
Towards the 600 AC, the zone was colonized
by the Greeks of Smaller Asia and it was baptized with the name
of Massalia. The establishment bloomed and during the Punic Wars
it supported in front of to Rome Carthage. In the 49 AC, after
supporting to Pompeyo Great in the civil war against Julio the Caesar,
Rome annexed the city.
Their inhabitants became to the Christianity during century III
AC and, in the 304, san Vicente was martyred in the city. In century
X the city happened to be a dominion of the counties of Wins and
century XIII, it became republic. In 1481, he happened to comprise
of the kingdom of France.
The commerce in the port expanded in century XVII, before undergoing
a terrible misfortune during the French Revolution and the Napoleonic
Wars. As of 1850, the harbor facilities extended and many factories
in Marseilles settled.
During World War II, it was occupied by the Germans and it underwent
serious destructions. More ahead, thanks to strong programs of construction,
Marseille became and it became a community with a modern urbanism.
Architecture
In the bay located in front of Marseille there are
several islands, between which is the island whose castle
(century XVI), describes in the novel of Alexander Dumas the count
of Montecristo. Several bunkers protect the port and, in a land
strip that projects towards the west of the bay, is the church of
Notre Dame of the Garde (century XIX), crowned by a gilded statue
of the Virgin Maria.
In spite of being the oldest city of France, Marseille conserves
few vestiges of old times. At the end of the decade of 1960, the
archaeologists discovered and unearthed part of the abutments and
the hellenistic walls of the city, and a part of the medieval cathedral,
the Greater one, than still is conserved.
In criptas of the century XI, on which the church of San Víctor
in century XIII was constructed, is an image of the Virgin Maria
who considers work of Saint Lucas. |
